Dr Tony Simons is the Deputy Director General at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Kenya. Dr Simons studied for his Bachelor’s degree in New Zealand before obtaining his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Cambridge University in the UK. During his PhD research and early career whilst working for Shell Oil (Forestry Research Limited), he focused on tree improvement programmes. Dr Simons has also worked at Oxford University for six years as a Senior Research Fellow. For five years, he was an adviser to the British Government on international forestry.
Dr Simons has worked on forestry projects in more than 35 tropical countries and is an expert representative on the United Nations Forum on Forests and the FAO Panel of Experts on Forest Genetic Resources. He holds an Honorary Professorship at University of Copenhagen and is a board member of Plant Resources of Tropical Africa. He has written over 100 scientific papers and articles, and is an editor of the Forests, Trees and Livelihoods Journal.In his current position he is responsible for science oversight, human resources and programmatic operations at one of the CGIAR institutes
