Phil Sorrell heads up the global mobile banking business within Temenos. Temenos’ Mobile products provide a simple and secure multichannel user experience for banking and payment transactions that can be carried out from virtually any mobile handset on a wide range of banking and financial systems. It can be used both by customers using very basic handsets providing essential banking functions as well as remote field agents who need sophisticated teller function on standard smartphone or portable POS device. The software platform with its rich function is being widely deployed across Africa.
Phil graduated with a master’s degree in Engineering from Cambridge University in the UK. In subsequent sales, marketing and product management roles at IBM and Unisys, he worked extensively with major telecom operators and banks helping them drive innovation. He co-founded FE-Mobile to launch a simple, secure and user-friendly multi-channel alternative to the early but fated WAP banking. The FE-Mobile solution exploited SMS, browser and downloadable applications to accommodate the different capabilities of handsets and network infrastructure. Uniquely, its application was secure even over insecure networks. FE-Mobile established partnerships with several core banking vendors and its solutions were sold on four continents before the company was acquired by Temenos in May 2010.
Phil has extensive experience of working around the globe in both developed and emerging markets – ranging from major international banks to rapidly evolving microfinance organisations. He has advised over 25 client banks on best-of breed mobile banking and m-commerce solutions – helping them to drive innovation, to create differentiation in the market and to generate new income streams.
