Phil Lawrie joined Al Jazeera in July 2007 as Director, Global Distribution. In this role, Phil has responsibility for the worldwide distribution and licensing of Al Jazeera Network channels and content – including the Al Jazeera Satellite Channel, Al Jazeera English, the Al Jazeera Documentary Channel and Al Jazeera Sport channels. Phil’s remit extends to syndication sales (programme and archive sales, broadcast rights etc.) and merchandising – and he manages a team spread across four locations in Doha, London, New York and Kuala Lumpur.
Prior to joining Al Jazeera Phil held several senior positions at Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) in business development roles based at its European headquarters in London. Latterly he was Vice President, Commercial Distribution & Digital Media Sales with full P&L responsibility for a department generating millions of dollars in direct sales and marketing exposure for brands including CNN International, Cartoon Network, TCM and Boomerang.
Directly before joining the Al Jazeera network Phil utilised his professional expertise consulting at Discovery Networks Europe. His career history also spans roles with American Express where he worked from 1994 – 2000 in senior management roles.
