Former Dutch corporate lawyer Frederik Eijkman (1968) has been living and working in the shanty towns of Kisumu, Kenya, since 1998. After 5 year managing a local community based development organisation, Frederik started PEP Intermedius Ltd (PEP), a financial intermediary made of small business units in Western Kenya. Its overarching goal is to enable systematic change amongst the poor rural communities by improving access to financial services. By the end of 2009 PEP manages over 80 outlets and is M-PESA's leading cash distribution network in the region.
