Charles is a seasoned banker of over 20 years’ practical banking experience that cuts across all facets of central and commercial banking. Charles has formerly worked as a regulator with the Central Bank of Kenya in various capacities, as a bank examiner, Kisumu Branch, Finance, Audit and National Debt. While at CBK he had an opportunity to work with the countries Deposit Insurance Scheme, the Deposit Protection Fund Board and did statutory management to five ailing financial institutions namely Kenya Finance Bank, Meridien BIAO Bank, Pan Africa Bank, Trust Bank, Delphis Bank (Now Oriental Commercial Bank) and Euro Bank among others. Within the same DPFB he worked as a Senior Accountant and also as a risk assessor to commercial banks in the industry then.
Charles moved to Co-operative Bank in 2004 initially as Senior Credit Risk Analyst before being deployed to Enterprise-wide Risk Management as a senior manager to lay foundation for Risk management for the bank as per the Central Bank’s Risk Management Guidelines and Basel II Accord. Charles moved to KCB Group in 2006 where he is Heading the Group Operational Risk & Compliance supporting – Kenya, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Uganda & Rwanda.
Within the last 5 years Charles has developed interest, trained extensively and worked in Risk Management which is a key pillar in modern banking. Focusing on Risk Management requires him to understand the business in totality in order to formulate realistic and workable policy frameworks for a resilient Enterprise-wide Risk Management in line with shareholder and regulator requirements and to a large extent the Basel Accord requirements. To this end he pursued an Advanced Diploma in Risk Management from Sweden.
After having developed the Group ORM framework and policy and procedures for Risk Control Self Assessment (RCSA), Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and Loss Data Management (LDM) and Enterprise wide Risk Management Framework, Charles is fast tracking the implementation of the frameworks across the group through identification, assessment, monitoring & reporting, risk control and mitigation plans.
Charles is a professional accountant both local and International holding a CPA(K) and a Fellow of Association of Certified Chartered Accountants, FCCA and holds the following professional memberships;
1. ACCA
2. GARP (Global Association for Risk Professionals) and
3. Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK)
He sits in the following key industry committees;
1. Member of ICPAK’s Financial Services Committee
2. Member of ACCA Kenya branch committee in charge of CPD for Kenya members
3. GARP Kenya founder member
He also holds an MBA in strategic management and is an alumnus of Oxford Brookes University – UK. He also holds an Advanced Diploma in Risk Management in Banking/Finance by KPMG Sweden.
Charles is happily married to one wife – Silvia and both are blessed with three children – Bonface, Jack and Ivy.
