Bill Torrey has been a broadcast journalist in Washington, D.C., for more than 35 years, including on-air and managerial positions with all-news WTOP, NBC News, the Voice of America and CBSMarketWatch.com. He was president of the environmental media production company, Finger Lakes Productions International, and a co-founder of the Radio Voyager global radio network. Since 2003 he has worked for the U.S. International Broadcasting Bureau Office of Marketing and Program Placement, where he is currently Director of Operations.
Torrey graduated with a triple major (biology, psychology, sociology) from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia (1967, Phi Beta Kappa). He has a masters degree in public affairs journalism from The American University in Washington, D.C., where he taught broadcast journalism for several years. Torrey also served as a Research Fellow at the Gannett Foundation (now Freedom Forum) Media Studies Center at Columbia University in New York, where he studied strategies and technologies to improve access to news for people who are blind.
Torrey is most proud of being one of five volunteers with a reading service in Washington who pioneered audio description for the blind for television, the movies and theaters in the United States.
Torrey lives with his wife, Alice, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. Their daughter, Rachel, teaches science in Los Angeles.
