AITEC ICT Summits - East, West and Southern Africa: AITEC to celebrate 25th Anniversary with continent-wide ICT Summit Circuit

AITEC Africa, the continent’s leading business event organiser for the ICT sector, is celebrating 25 years of serving Africa’s ICT community by holding a series of regional ICT Summits over August-October this year. They will cover West, Southern and East Africa, with the following venues and dates:

• AITEC West Africa ICT Summit, Accra International Conference Centre, 15-16 August

• AITEC Southern Africa ICT Summit, Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre, Maputo, 5-6 December

• AITEC East Africa ICT Summit, Oshwal Centre, Nairobi, 24-25 October

Each of the Summits will have as its theme: “Smart Cities > Smart Communities > Smart Enterprises > Smart Exports” and will include a market-leading business-to-business exhibition alongside an extensive conference programme, including four focus areas:

• Data Security World

• Cloud Computing World

• Mobile Applications World

• Smart Exports: ICT-empowered services

Announcing the Summit series, AITEC founder and chairman Sean Moroney said each conference would be an opportunity to showcase the skills, capacity and best practices in ICT implementation that Africa has developed over the past 25 years. “There has been tremendous growth in ICT adoption over the period, with amazing acceleration over the past five years as a result of mobile phone penetration. We are now in the early stages of a mobile data era, which is going to further transform the sector. Africa needs to work out how to use this technology creatively to improve the quality of life for all citizens – and how to monetise these ICT skills by developing a smart exports drive. These are the issues we will be covering in depth at each of the Summits.”

The AITEC Chairman provided the following outlines for each of the theme focus areas:

Building Smart Cities: The region’s cities are hampered by inefficient management and infrastructure, reducing the productivity of their workforces and degrading the quality of life for all levels of society. The smart application of ICT solutions can dramatically transform these cities from their post-colonial quagmire of corruption, maladministration, poor planning and under-performance. The Summit will act as a clearing house for international and regional best practices in order to identify short-term fixes and medium and long-term strategies to create smart cities that serve the needs of their citizens.

Developing Smart Societies:  Deploying ICT solutions to increase the quality of life for both urban and rural populations. Delivering improved services in healthcare, education, agriculture and housing.

Creating Smart Enterprises: Smart enterprises are competitive and profitable. In order to compete locally, regionally and internationally Africa’s large enterprises, as well as its SMEs, need to plan and implement world-class ICT management systems. The Summit will provide a platform to take a broad perspective on latest enterprise systems

Exporting Smart Skills: Building an outsourcing industry in East Africa that capitalises in the region’s expanding pool of ICT expertise, a tech-savvy workforce and customer-centric interpersonal skills.
